Should the US strengthen gun control laws?

Yes, gun control is important, but NOT to the extreme degree we see in the US today. Gun control does NOTHING to lower crime, gun control makes buying guns hard, and state laws become stricter. However, gun crimes are commited by criminals, and do criminals buy gun at gun stores?, No, if they did, they'd be arrested when the clerk sees his background record. In reality, criminals get their guns illegally from the Black Market and are smuggled onto the streets. You can have the strictest laws ever, but it wont stop gun crime, if a criminal is going to kill with an assault rifle, he WILL do it, wil he go to jail?, of course, but that illegal assault weapon that was smuggled in, just killed someone, even though the law says assault weapons arent legal. So all gun control does, is make it harder for normal law respecting citizens to exersize their second amendment right. NOTHING else. You can make the strictest laws you can think of, and gun crime will still be the same.

Your question asks for an opinion. My opinion is no. There are already more than 20,000 Federal, State, and local gun control laws on the books. However, in many cases, the laws are not enforced. For example- it is against the law for anyone convicted of a felony (a serious crime) to have a gun. However, when a convicted felon commits another crime, such as armed robbery, he is rarely prosecuted for having the gun- only for the armed robbery. It has been found that when gun laws are enforced (such as Operation Exile) and career criminals go to jail, crime decreases.

However, politicians continue to try to pass more laws- since it gives them an opportunity to look good to the public. "See, I did something to reduce crime."

Rather than trying to regulate inanimate objects, we need to control behavior of people that commit crimes, whether that crime involves a gun, knife, or pointy stick.

You're asking for a matter of opinion. While I personally would get behind a couple items which had been proposed in the past, I would generally say no - especially to many of the proposals which have come forth. For example, I believe ballistic fingerprinting has absolutely no merit, especially since it can be defeated by five minutes with a file.
