If you are saying that a customer physically attacked you, then legally speaking, your boss shouldn't write you up for using self defense, and should instead take legal action against that customer. If the customer was simply making threats, then your reaction to that is what completely controls what your boss should do. If you threaten back, then yes you should be written up, however if you only acted peacefully, then writing you up is unreasonable.
