Here is my list of reasons why a contract of employment may be terminated:

1. The employee is doing unsatisfactory work.

2. The employee doesn't even show up for work.

3. The employee is stealing from the employer.

4. The employee has endangered the lives or health of other employees through reckless and/or illegal actions.

5. The employee is discovered to have lied about his or her qualifications, and is actually not even qualified for the job in question.

6. The employer has gone out of business.

7. The employer is still in business, but is not doing as much business as before, and needs to reduce the number of employees in accordance with the reduced level of work that needs to be done.

8. The employee has lost some necessary license (typically a driver's license) that is needed to legally do the work for which he or she has been hired.

Can your employer fire you for shop lifting at another store?

short answer: No. But you may be fired for other reasons (listed below). And your employer may keep a closer eye on you to find such reasons. But if they fire you BECAUSE you shoplifted at a different store, then you go to Employee Standards and file a complaint. Quote- "There are a number of circumstances where an employer is not required to give notice of termination. Probably the most important of these circumstances is termination for "just cause." Examples of just cause include:willful misconduct, disobedience, ordeliberate neglect of duty, where these actions are not condoned by the employer. Other circumstances that permit an employer to terminate employment without giving notice include:the employee was hired for a definite term or task of less than 12 months, at the end of which the employment terminates (the 12-month limit for term or task does not apply to oil well drilling or geophysical exploration),the employee was laid off after refusing an offer by the employer of reasonable alternative work, the employee refuses work made available through a seniority system, the employee is not provided with work because a strike or lockout is taking place at the employee's place of employment, the employee is employed under an agreement by which the employee may elect either to work or not to work for a temporary period when requested by the employer, the contract of employment is or has become impossible for the employer to perform by reason of unforeseeable or unpreventable causes beyond the control of the employer, the employee was hired on a seasonal basis and at the end of the season the employment is terminated, the employee is on temporary layoff and does not return to work within seven days after being requested to do so, in writing, by the employer, the employee is in the construction industry, the employee is employed in the cutting, removal, burning or other disposal of trees and/or brush for the primary purpose of clearing land. When an employee's employment is terminated for 'just cause', the employer must pay all wages, overtime, general holiday pay and vacation pay due the employee within ten days following the date of termination. The employer must be able to support their position that there was just cause for dismissal without notice." quote- "The length of notice an employer is required to give depends on the duration of employment and must be in writing. The minimum notice requirements that employers must give are:one week - for employment of more than three months, but less than two yearstwo weeks - for employment of two years, but less than four years, four weeks - for employment of four years, but less than six years, five weeks - for employment of six years, but less than eight years, six weeks - for employment of eight years, but less than 10 years, andeight weeks - for employment of 10 years or more. An employer may choose to give pay for the required notice period instead of providing notice. A combination of written notice and pay in lieu of notice (termination pay) is also acceptable."

Employment Rights Act 1996?

The Employment Rights Act 1996 was created by the Parliament of the United Kingdom to address employee issues such as unfair dismissal, time off from work and protection of wages. The Act has been a source of controversy because it covers most British people and contract workers, but it does not cover low paid, agency workers. The Act describes an employee as someone who holds a contract of employment and differentiates between someone who is employed by an employer and someone who is self employed. In some legal cases, vulnerable workers were labeled as self employed and were not allowed protection under the Act. This meant that workers could be fired for no good reason. Fair Dismissal One of the most important rights highlighted in the Act is the right to a fair dismissal. An unfair dismissal occurs when an employer unlawfully fires or dismisses a worker. Situations that qualify for unlawful dismissal include: discrimination, maternity leave and refusal to work more than 48 hours weekly. Employment Tribunal Unfair dismissal may be contested at an employment tribunal. The employee must prove that he was unfairly dismissed, and the complaint must be submitted within three months of termination. If the employee wins the case, compensation is awarded, or the job may be reinstated. Reasonable Notice Employees must have reasonable notice before being terminated. This notice ranges from a minimum of one week up to twelve weeks and depends on the length of the work contract. Written Contract The main terms in the employment contract must be expressed in writing and be presented to the employee at least eight weeks after they begin work. The contract serves as an employment guide and list of employee rights. It does not have to include all terms of the agreement. Time Off Rights Employees are entitled to a reasonable break or amount of time off if a dependent is sick, injured or gives birth. In addition, employees are given time off if a dependent dies. Guaranteed Wages The Act ensures that employees are protected from illegal wage deductions. Even if there is no work to perform during employment hours, employers are required to provide pay. Since 1997, the Act has been amended a number of times. This is due to the fact that the complicated issues of employment case law are always changing. A knowledgeable employment law solicitor can provide up-to-date information and legal advice.

Can you collect disability after working eight years if you are 72 years old and collect Social Security from your deceased spouse?

You collect disability only if you show that you are unable to perform work, not that you worked as long as you have. If you worked eight years and there are justifiable reasons for quitting, as determined by your state's employment security office then you might be eligible for unemployment benefits. This has nothing to do with the Social Security you are presently receiving.
