in long beach, ca., it is illegal to dumpster dive because i believe the law has it that they are private property belonging to private residences or to the city of lond beach...

[NEW EDIT] Actually its legal if its on public property. As soon as the owner puts there can on the street for the trash man to collect you can legally dive into it because when they put there trash in a public area(the street) it becomes public property. They can however take it back onto there property and it becomes theres again. But as the person stated above..there wrong. Long beach does not own peoples/businesses trash cans once its on the street. Otherwise if your football went off your property and you go to get it then your stealing from long beach? um no. Speaking of that if someones football or anything else went off there property by accident, you can legally take it. its not nice but its legal. Streets are public not owned. So anyways the dumpster diving goes for both businesses and owners, its fair game if its off there property.

Actually the city of Long Beach, Ca does consider the taking of items from the purple bins stealing. If you have trash pickers, you may call (562) 435 6711 to report it. Many of these dumpster divers are leaving a path of litter in their wake and the city isn't tolerating it anymore.
