Living in a single family home poses several dangers, some are unrecognized by many home owners. Among the most "unknown" danger is radiation from the earth below the home. There are gauges on the market that not only are smoke alarms but radiation alarms. Over time exposure to this type of natural radiationcan be damaging to one's health. This was the most "unknown" danger so I listed it separately. Here are some others:

A. Bad wiring. Wires for normal household use can lose their insulation over time and the heat caused by the electricity can cause a fire.

B. Electric heaters. Some people use electric heaters to help warm their homes. Sometimes these heaters are to close to combustion prone furniture or other types of rugs. The extra heat can cause combustion and start a fire.

C. Gas leaks. Homes that use gas from their utility companies are within pipes to use for ovens and heat. Often times these pipes have connections to other gas pipes. If these connections over time become worn then gas can leak into the home and cause death while sleeping. Also this gas is highly combustible and if it comes into contact with fire ( a lighted match, oven pilot lights, or hot water heater pilot lights ) the explosion can be devastating.

D. Carbon Monoxide. This problem actually caused the death of a famous tennis player in New York. He was sleeping in a bedroom above the car garage in a friends home. The car was left running and the carbon monoxide it produced leaked into the bedroom and the man died of carbon monoxide prisoning. There are alarms on the market to detect carbon monoxide in the home. They should be bought and used for protection.

Outside the home dangers.

A. Large branches or large trees near your home can fall on the roof during a hurricane or high wind storm, and injure or kill the occupants of the home. They will also cause roof damage. These types of hazards can be avoided by not trimming dead limbs from trees or by having to remove the tree.

B. Roof collapses. Snow can accumulate on a home's roof so much that the weight can cause a ceiling to collapse. Aside from the damage, most importantly it can crush the occupants of the home.

C. Window glass. During a heavy wind storm the glass windows are subject to being broken by the wind and the sharp glass can be blown into the home to injure or kill.

D. Burglars. Protect your home with burglar alarms to void a forced entry that can cause loss of life and property.

How does a heat pump central air system work to efficiently heat and cool a home?

A heat pump central air system works by transferring heat between the inside and outside of a home. In the winter, it extracts heat from the outside air and brings it inside to warm the home. In the summer, it removes heat from inside the home and releases it outside to cool the home. This process is efficient because it doesn't generate heat, it simply moves it from one place to another.
