Being a solicitor involves providing clients with expert legal advice and aid. To be a solicitor not only a knowledge of the law is required but often customer service or 'people skills' are used to help clients cope in stressful situations i.e divorce.
The role of a solicitor can vary dependant on the type of work they do for example you could work for a local council, court, financial service or a bank amongst others. A solicitor often specialises in one type of law such as probate therefore there job description would be entirely different from some one working in criminal law.

The role of a solicitor in United Kingdom courts is to contact a barrister to represent the solicitor's client in a trial matter. The solicitor "instructs" the barrister, meaning explains the facts and discusses the trial strategy with the barrister and the client. The solicitor usuall also sits with the client during trial but may not act as trial attorney before the court.
In the UK and some other countries, lawyers are either solicitors or barristers. Solicitors handle the usual legal work done in the office, but are not permitted to appear in court to represent parties at trial. Barristers are admitted to practice in the courts and handle trials but only after consultation with the client and his/her solicitor.
By way of contrast, in the United States and some other countries, lawyers are not divided into two such distinct types. All attorneys admitted to the bar may practice before the courts.
