From a practical standpoint, the American people will demand some prior experience in government service and politics. If you don't have that, you're considered unqualified to hold the highest office in the land.

The public generally won't vote for somebody who tries to go from some other career besides politics directly into the White House. A few Generals have done it.

Most U.S. presidents have been U.S. Senators, Representatives in Congress, or Governors of their home states.
