I served once as a negotiator in national union-management contract talks and - prior to that, as a Shop Steward representing union members at grievance sessions. Win a few, lose a few. But even though I think that unions have become ineffective, I still believe in the grievance process as perhaps the best way of resolving disputes in industry. Generally, I would try to intercede with management to avoid a formal grievance meeting, but this didn't always work. The key to a good relationship is honesty and disclosure. Unfortunately, one side or the other or often both simply lack trust in the other and therefore, a settlement is reached but seldom a satisfactory one to both sides. If I had it to do over again, I would really push for compulsory arbitration and thus avoid a legal or illegal strike. An experienced arbitrator - with no conflict of interest - generally resolves the issues and, since it's an outside ruling, labour and management can't blame the other for the settlement terms. So let's shake on it, and get back to work.
