That depends on the vehicle being operated. A "commercial vehicle" doesn't necessarily have to be one which requires a CDL. If your business operates a one ton pickup, that's a commercial vehicle. Likewise, not all Class 7 and Class 8 trucks are commercial vehicles - many are exempted under the clause which exempts recreational vehicles, registered farm trucks, and emergency equipment.

But, for argument's sake, let's assume you're referring to vehicle requiring a CDL. There are three classes of CDL-

  • Class A: Vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating of more than 26,000 lbs., when the vehicle in tow (i.e., trailer) has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating in excess of 10,000 lbs. This is what would be used for tractor-trailer, dump trucks pulling equipment trailers... even a non-CMV such as a Ford F650 would require this when pulling a trailer over 10,000 GVWR.
  • Class B: Single vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating in excess of 26,000 lbs. Additionally, a trailer with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating not in excess of 10,000 lbs. may be pulled.
  • Class C: This is for vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating under 26,000 lbs., and would not normally require a CDL, except they're either hauling a quantity of hazardous materials which requires a placard, or else the vehicle is a bus designed to transport more than 15 persons (including the driver)

Are you required to have a card to drive a commercial vehicle that only requires a class c licensein calif.?

What type of Class C licence, exactly? A basic drivers licence in California is known as a Non-Commercial licence, or Class C licence. HOWEVER, there is a Class C Commercial Drivers Licence, intended for vehicles under 26,000 lbs. GVWR which are placarded to haul hazardous materials, designed to transport more than 15 persons (including the driver), etc. If it requires the non-commercial licence, there's no requirement to possess a medical card. If it requires the Class C Commercial Drivers Licence, then, under federal law, you must always have a valid DOT medical card in your possession at all times when operating that vehicle.

"None class" on a driver's license typically indicates that the individual is not authorized to operate any specific class of vehicle, such as commercial vehicles or motorcycles. This designation may apply to those who hold a standard driver's license but do not have the necessary endorsements or classifications for operating specialized vehicles.
