By definition, a divided highway has a midline area that divides the lanes that go in each direction. Some have fences, cement or planted medians or more.

It has two solid lines running down the center (most often in yellow). Or it has an actual barrier of some kind.

It is significant in that the vehicles on the opposite side of the road from you are traveling in the opposite direction. So, you can expect to see some oncoming traffic. You want to be sure that you're driving on the correct side of the road.

However, if you are on road that has two lanes, but both lanes are going in the same direction, then that is not a divided highway.
