the disadvantages were that they were poorly trained and most often disorganized. since they were volunteers, many felt free to return home at will to help harvest or keep buisness going. Also congress was slow in supplying money for war. Another disadvantage for the North, in general, was that it had to win, and had to attack. The South merely had to defend, and a "tie" (i.e., a long drawn-out war with no real winner) would be a victory for the South and a loss for the North.
