A cia officer or agent's center of motivation(motive) is to collect foreign intelligence and information to provide the United States policy makers(politicians/congress) information for them to decide what laws should be established. Americans who belong to the cia are called "officers" and not agents. Agents are foreigners who are recruited by the cia to spy on their own country for the cia. Typically, the usual day for a cia officer/spy is to spend most of their career overseas recruiting foreign agents, behind a desk making reports, and sometimes participate in covert operations in foreign countries(a.k.a. going undercover and spying) at the command of the President of the United States. Going undercover is usually rare or occasional within a spy's career, despite all the action that is portrayed in those action movies.

A spy in the service of the United States would likely be working for the National Clandestine Service (NCS) and would either be an Operations Officer (OO) or a Collections Management Officer (CMO). Primarily, these officers work overseas, and work together to identify sources of information that is judged to be critical to the security of the U.S., and obtain it.

A spy, who would speak the native language fluently, might befriend many individuals who had previously been identified as potential sources of information. Over a period of time, then, the spy would gain their trust, and arrange to retrieve the information.

Overseas espionage agents might have sham jobs in U.S. Embassies, giving them diplomatic immunity from prosecution. Many others would appear to hold other types of jobs, while actually working as a spy.

A spy might be called upon at times to do little more than buy stationery and stamps, and mail unimportant letters.

The field of espionage is very large and varied, and at its present scale, requires a team made up of many people with many different specialties. The CIA, for example, employs (among others) Accountants, analysts, translators, mathemeticians and even artists.

They aren't referred to as 'spies'. The official title is Operations Officer (OO). Many movies and books portray CIA OO's as super-spies (invincible, able to do anything, ect.) Truth is they aren't out spying on high end criminals (most of the time) and seducing beautiful women and driving an Aston martin like James bond. Most CIA OO's are stationed in places like Afghanistan gathering counter-terrorism information. I also hope you have realized that James bonds gadgets are COMPLETELY 120% fictional.
