I have been in the custodial field for almost 10 years now. Most employers except little to no experience at first but do look for applicants with a high school diploma or equivalent. The main duties of a custodian are cleaning and minor maintenance. These duties include bathrooms, vacuuming, dusting and sweeping, mopping, and disposal of trash and recyclables. No special certifications, licenses, or registrations are usually needed unless the employer requests them. You must be able to use independent judgement to prioritize, analyze, and apply solutions to various maintenance, custodial, and repair problems. There is high exposure to different and potentially harmful chemicals and different types of machinery. You must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/'or move more than 100 pounds. You must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl with no problems. You will occasionally be expose to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. You must also be able to communicate and use interpersonal skills. In all you are responsible to clean, repair, and maintain assigned buildings, equipment, systems, and grounds in compliance with all safety, health, and regulations.
