The Baker Act allows for emergency involuntary commitment and examination.
It can be initiated by judges, law enforcement officials, physicians or mental health professionals.
There must be evidence that the person to be committed - -
(1) has a mental illness and
(2) is a harm to self, harm to others, or self neglectful
The individual committed for examination may be held up to 72 hours before they either must be released or the court must be petitioned for a longer commitment period.
