This means someone steals a check, from say a mailbox, and alters the info on the check ,say the persons name the check is made out to, and cashes it at a bank.

Added: In common everyday language it is the "passing" of a bad check (i.e.: presenting it for payment). Uttering is an entirely different charge than "Forgery." Forgery means that you actually WROTE the check with intent to defraud.

Basically this means that you passed of a stolen check with the signature forged. You are asserting that the check is valid and is yours to use, when in reality it is not.
