The law sets up the structure and framework by which the government operates. It also sets up certain rules which we all must use to interact with each other, and creates a system by which we can seek to be made whole when we are wronged by another person.
In short, it creates an organize society. Without law, we would exist in anarchy.

The US did adopt the English Common Law, the only state that does not have the English Common Law is Louisiana.
