In this type of situation, the personel are not permitted to treat an unwilling patient. although, if the patient is showing signs of not being fully operative outside of the building, they are then abel to make what decision is neccesary to help that person.

Added: It depends on what kind of hospital is being referred to and what the patient is being treated for.

If you have been admitted to a hospital for a purely medical reason you have the right to leave although you may be asked to sign a document indicating that you are leaving Against Medical Advice (AMA).

If you have been admitted and confined to a mental institution via an emergency commitment order or a court order, you do NOT have the authority to leave at your own free will. Leaving under such a situation would make you an 'absconder' and you could be taken into custody and returned.
