The old saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me," is so wrong. BUT - the only alternative you have is to walk away when the name-calling starts. If you walk away, the other person has no one to irritate, no one to fight with...only themselves.

Walk away with a smile knowing you aren't enabling them to abuse you any longer.

Added; If the name calling or other verbal abuse is part of an ongoing campaign by a live-in 'friend' or family member, and you can not ecape from it, you should check with your local authorities to determine if you are being psychologically abused under any applicable statutes that may be applicable.
