The greatest responsibility that all people have is to themselves. Society does not flourish and prosper when it's citizens are obligated to behave the way the state would will it, society flourishes and prospers when the individuals who live within that society flourish and prosper. The state, no state ever, has not been able to fashion any successful policy that can will people to flourish and prosper, if people are going to do this they will do it with or with out the states involvement. When people act in their own best interest, they are more likely to prosper. Those who prosper are more likely to survive and to survive is the greatest responsibility all people have...to survive.

When people begin developing obligations such as citizenship, this is where anti-survival policies begin to flourish. Societies need a military to provide for the common defense. Armies need soldiers who will readily lay down their life for the common good. A soldier does not flourish and prosper and during wartime that soldiers responsibilities are virtually anti-survival. Societies require governments and governments come with taxes and intrusive legislation. When the taxation becomes too burdensome and the legislation too overbearing then people will struggle to flourish and prosper and have an overall harder time of surviving. A bureaucratic state can so impede the daily business of life with its endless licensing schemes and all the codes and regulations that follow that create the endless citations and fines that extract more money form the citizens that after a time people are in servitude to the state and in fact, for most workers and laborers the government will collect their share of the peoples money before they themselves get paid.

More taxes are necessary to fund the inept and incompetent administrative agencies who claim all sorts of authority while impeding any real accomplishment. More taxes to fund agencies such as FEMA so they may blunder through domestic emergencies making a bad situation worse. More taxes are necessary so the Federal government can bail out failing corporations and banks because rewarding failure is what government does best. More taxes are necessary to throw into the failed public school system so those who are failing can keep getting paid so they may keep failing. More taxes are necessary so the executives of the Metropolitan Transit Authority can come up with eloquent excuses as to why the buses never run on time. These are the responsibilities of the citizen; death and taxes.

Responsibility towards oneself has nothing to do with paying taxes and sacrificing themselves for the greater good. Responsibility towards oneself requires the hard choice of taking responsibility for ones actions and even for ones thoughts. Responsibility towards oneself requires that person do what they can to flourish and prosper because if they are poor and destitute they are no good to anyone not even themselves. The more successful a person is the more vital they are as a citizen in any given society.
