A labor market survey is a tool generally used by insurance companies to reduce or eliminate entitlement to benefits in workers' compensation claims. For example, under the Defense Base Act, which covers contractors injured on U.S. defense bases overseas, an injured worker (IW) who cannot return to his or her regular job is entitled to total disability benefits unless it can be shown that suitable work is available within the injured worker's medical restrictions. Insurers do this by hiring a vocational rehabilitation expert who should interview the IW, review the medical records, determine the limitations, perform a transferable skills analysis and research and identify certain jobs available in the IW's commuting area.
