Principal offender - The person having the most active role, usually the person who commits the actus reas.
Counselor - One who advises the principal offender on how to commit the crime.
Procurer - A person who solicits the aid of others in taking part in a crime.
Conspirator - someone who conspire with others to effect some unlawful purpose. The actus reas is the agreement, not the carrying out of the offense.
Abettor - A person who is present, assisting or encouraging the principal offender at the time of the commission of the crime.
Accessory- A person who aids and helps after the fact.
The charged party disputes the criminal action by pleading "not guilty" to the charges. The prosecution bears the burden of proving that the charged party is guilty of a criminal offense. The charged party is not required to "prove" innocence.
