What is it like in jail?

Jail is not a place that you want to visit, be it Juvenile (Jail for people 17 or younger), Corrections Center, or a County Jail (Jail for those 18 or older).

The food is no where near what you would grab out of your refrigerator or cook. The beds are very uncomfortable & the people can be dangerous; if not deadly.

Jail is also very boring. You are allowed out of your cell into the "Day" room for majority of the day, and then normally anywhere from 10-11:30 PM, you are placed on "Lockdown" which means you're put into your cell and your doors are electronically locked so you cannot leave until roughly 6:00 - 7:00 a.m.

Majority of inmates find cleaning, writing letters, reading, and sleeping to be beneficial when luxury items such as Video Games, Computers, and general freedom are taken away from you.

As mentioned before, you run the risk of being injured, assaulted, or even (though rarely in jail) killed by other inmates. Some inmates find objects to sharpen into shivs and other dangerous and deadly items.

As for explaining the entire experience, it is impossible. Jails different from level, location, budget, and capacity.

Overcrowded jails, with low budgets, and located in lower class areas may be more unappealing or dangerous than larger more sound jails in middle to upper class cities or counties.

In conclusion, you should avoid going to jail for a "First-hand" experience, as the experience is nothing you will enjoy. You lose your freedom and Jail is not a five star vacation resort.

Um, most of my patients would say "hell". And from the looks of it, they're right. I get to go home every day (God willing) - and I sure as heck wouldn't want to spend the night! If you are gang affiliated you may have some protection, but (on the other hand), rival groups will be out to get you. There are many assaults (physical, sexual, verbal, otherwise) every day. It is a very hostile environment. The food is awful. The cells are small. The company consists of other criminals and staff often don't even look you in the eye. Avoid it at all costs.

While it is slightly to dramatically different in every state, in every facility, and for every person, prison is largely not the stuff of myth and legend. It is not a pleasant place, but it not what it used to be: a place where one fears for his life, a place where the inmates are afraid to go to sleep on the chance they will be shanked, assaulted, or worse. These things still happen, but they are largely not the norm. Prison is place of waiting. Inmates wait for the morning to come. They wait to go to the bathroom. They wait to take a shower. They wait for mail, for meals, for healthcare, for library, for recreation, for yard time, for TV time, for access to the microwave, water, and store. They wait for telephones, and visits from their families and friend. Mostly they wait for the system to decide when their time is enough time to pay for the crime for which they serve. Prison is not where one goes to get a big cellmate named "Bubba" who rapes him at every opportunity. Prison is not where one goes to get stabbed to death, shanked. Prison is not where one goes to learn the art of fecal flinging. Prison is where one goes to wait. And wait. And wait And wait.
