The onus/burden is on the defendant that even though they were breaking a law, they have a legal reason why they did it, and thus should not be found guilty. EXAMPLE. Medical Emergency; if you get a ticket for speeding, but the reason you were speeding was that you were driving a very sick friend to the hospital. then that would be a LAWFUL EXCUSE. It is a simple example, but it gives you the gis.
