The Hyde Amendment is the common name applied to the Federal legislation that prohibited the use of federal funds for abortions. It is considered a response on the part of the originator of the measure, Rep. Henry Hyde of Illinois to the 1973 decision on Roe v. Wade. Essentially, it ended Medicade funded abortions for low-income women in the US.
