It started when Samuel Slater brought the US the invention of the textile machine from England. He needed easy, cheap labor for his factories. Since there were no laws about child labor back then, he could make children (generally ages 8-15) work under harsh conditions for long hours and extremely low pay.

Reformers like Mother Jones and Jane Addams pushed for child labor laws, and eventually those laws came to pass. Now, the law is that a child cannot work for more than 8 hours a day, and that the workplace must have safety rules/regulations.
