To buy alcohol in a public house or shop in the UK, you need to be 18. To drink in a pub or club, you need to be 18. However, if you are over 16, you may drink beer, cider or wine (or all 3) with a meal in a licensed restaurant. There are no legal restrictions on drinking at home (although if you are under 18, someone else would have to buy it for you). A court, or social services, might decide that giving a young person excessive booze for their age constitutes child neglect.
