You can't go to jail for owing money. There is no debtors prison in the United States. You can however get sued to for the money. As long as the hospital wants and tries to collect the money, you are responsible for paying it back. Whether or not they go to all the trouble to collect it is up to them.

Generally hospitals collect insurance money fairly quickly and sell the bill to 3rd party collectors for pennies on the dollar. You then have a collector harrassing you with calls and threatening letters but there is a way to make it stop. Cindym
