If it's not the strangest, it has to be close. On July 12, 1942 at the Green Parrot Restaurant and Bar on Third Ave. near 100th St., New York City. The proprietor was shot in an apparent robbery, of the 20 or so patrons in the bar that day no one seemed to see anything. They all claimed to be at the other end of the room. As it turned out the Green Parrot was named for the owners' parrot that lived at the bar. On the day of the murder the bird kept yelling, 'Robert, Robert, Robert. The police thought he was saying 'robber'. Once they figured he wasn't yelling 'robber' it didn't take them long to find the only regular customer with the name of Robert. Yes, Robert was the 'dirty bird' that shot the owner. It wasn't a robbery at all, but a murder committed out of rage. Thanks to the parrot, the killer got 7 to 15 years in Sing Sing Prison.
