To be a lawyer it helps to have the ability to analyze large amounts of information and determine what bits of information are relevant to your case. Also you need the ability to read and digest case law and statutes. You should be able to interact and empathize with people and be compassionate about their problems. You also need to be able to express yourself well verbally and be dynamic and convincing with strong personality.

In order to be a licensed attorney in the US, you need to attend and graduate from an accredited 4-year college or university and attend and graduate from law school then pass the Bar Exam (a 2-day 12 hour test) for each state that you want to practice law in. Some states, such as California, allow you attend a law school that is not accredited, but the law school must be in California. Most states require that you attend an ABA-accredited law school. You can check each state's specific requirements by doing a search on "(your state) bar exam".
