The United States Secret Service was created for that sole intention.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Marshal's Service will also investigate from time-to-time, but the secret service has been given the responsibility.

The US Postal Inspection Service.
The US Secret Service is the US government agency nominally in charge of counterfeiting. It was originally part of the Treasury Department , but its role became one of crime-fighting and was expanded in 1901 to include protection of the President and government officials, for which it is now chiefly known. In 2003, the Secret Service was placed under the Department of Homeland Security.
Clause 6
To stop rampant counterfeiting after the Civil War in 1865
Presidential security and investigate counterfeiting cases
Counterfeiting is not a "type"of crime, it is it's own offense. Primarily it is the reproduction of US currency, but can also apply to any government issued document of value (e.g.: food stamps, etc).. See below link:

The government counterfeits when they create money of thin air backed by no production and created by the printing press . === === In both the previous and current versions of American currency, there is strong evidence that a government was counterfeiting and circulating US currency. In the earlier case, the alleged perpetrator was Iran; in the later it was North Korea. In neither case was proof offered at the civilian level, although the US and Japan did in fact sanction North Korea for this. Government-level counterfeiting is nowadays a political tool.
The Secret Service was originally established in 1865 as part of the Department of the Treasury to combat counterfeiting. Over time, its responsibilities expanded to include protecting the President, Vice President, and other high-level officials, as well as investigating financial crimes. While protecting the President is probably what the Secret Service is most well-known for, its original purpose of safeguarding the nation's currency and financial system remains an important part of its mandate.
