There were elected officials during the period of the Roman Republic. Their term of office was one year, except for the censors, whose term of office was 18 months.
Normally the Romans would call their government officials by their names. The public offices did not have titles that went with them except during the time of the principate when all the emperors were known as Caesar, a title. The names of the offices of the elected officials were: Quaestor,Tribune of the Plebs, Aedile, Praetor and Consul.Normally the Romans would call their government officials by their names. he is the governor general, which is the head of state. However, except in national emergency, he takes orders from the elected officials. His role is the same as the queen of Great Britain

They are elected to represent constituents. El Salvador is a republic set up to resemble the govt. of the U.S., except the Legislative Branch is unicameral (no Senate.) El Salvador has many political parties; however the two most popular ones --ARENA and the FMLN-, ideologically resemble the Republican and Democratic parties, respectively.
During the period of the Roman republic the magistrates were they executive officers of state. They were the consuls, the two annually elected heads of the republic, the praetors, who were the chief justices, the censors who carried out the census, enrolled the senators, oversaw public morality and commissioned and funded public works, the aediles, who carried out many administrative functions and the quaestors, who were the treasurers. They were elected annually, except for the censors who were elected every 18 months. During the period of rule by emperors they were government officials appointed by the emperor.
First of all, bear in mind that the Roman Republic was not like present day republics. The officials, although elected by the people, had different responsibilities than our present day officials. Each official had his own area of influence and a higher ranking official could veto the proposals of a lower ranking one. A tribune of the plebs could veto everyone except a dictator. In this way the Romans had their checks and balances.
