the significant constitutional compromise negotiated in 1867 was during the charlottetown,quebec city, and london conferences that led to confederation in 1867, all sides gave up some things to get other things, confederation thus created a federation (alliance) of provinces from former independent colonies. compromses led to two levels of government. the federal government deals with national and international areas, such as defence, trade,and so on. provincial governments deal with local social, political, cultural, and economic matters. to this day, both levels dispute who has more power in overlapping areas, such as health care and the economy.
