Be available to them. Be there. Your presence may be enough. When they need time alone, allow it. When your friend opens up and shares grief, listen. At times, you might become a target of their anger which is difficult, decide if you can live with it, and if you can, love them, take it and try to understand. Be yourself, and be there. Also, remember the holidays and the anniversary of their loss with a card or a similar small but thoughtful gesture.
