The Constitution guarantees the states a republican form of government. However, since states and citizens are represented by legislators who are chosen by the majority of the citizens the system is more properly described as a democratic republic.

A republic. A republic means a government where the people select representatives to represent the peoples wishes usually determined by a vote. In a pure democracy the popular vote of the people rules but tends to be unfair to people in less populated areas. In a republic representatives are assigned based on population in districts. Thsi is more fair because if we just used the popular vote there would be no need for people in California to vote. 80 percent of the population in AMerica lives east of the Mississippi river so, in other words people east of the river would decide for everyone in a pure Democracy. We still consider ourselve a democracy because we vote for or representatives.
