The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) is an ideological terrorist group. More specifically, it is an eco-terrorist group.
The ELF holds no religious agenda, supports no government, and has little interest in financial gain. Instead, the ELF website states that the organization has three objectives:
First, inflict economic damage on those harming the environment.
Second, educate the public on environmental degradation.
Third, avoid harming all life--human and animal.
These objectives are all ideological and thus place the ELF in the category of ideological terrorism. The ELF, however, remains motivated by biocentrism and deep ecology. In essence, these beliefs contend that humans and animals both have intrinsic value; neither is superior. Additionally, humans should rollback industrialization and allow the earth to return to its natural pristine state. These concepts plus the ELF's focus on the environment lead to the eco-terrorist label.
