Misdemeanors and Felonies
There are two main types of crimes: misdemeanors and felonies. Misdemeanors are less serious offenses, such as petty theft or disorderly conduct, and typically result in fines or short jail sentences. Felonies are more serious crimes, like murder or robbery, and can lead to longer prison sentences or even the death penalty. The specific punishments for each crime vary depending on the severity and circumstances of the offense.
You don't. New state law allows only some types of misdemeanors to be expunged from records. Felonies will be on your criminal history. Always.
The four types of criminal law are felonies, misdemeanors, infractions, and treason. Felonies are more serious crimes that are typically punishable by imprisonment for one year or more. Misdemeanors are less serious offenses with penalties usually involving fines or imprisonment for less than one year. Infractions are minor violations that often result in fines rather than jail time. Treason refers to actions that betray one's country, typically involving acts against the government.
There are only TWO types of crimes. Misdemeanors - punishable by UP TO one year in jail - AND - Felonies - which are punishable by MORE THAN one year in prison.
In the scheme of things, misdemeanors are middle of the road crimes, more trouble than forfeitures, less than felonies. Keep in mind that misdemeanors can prevent employment in some professions, etc. And they are still not good to have on your record. The best bet is to just not do anything illegal, then we don't have to ask these types of questions.
Misdemeanors and civil cases
I believe that felonies regarding controlled substances are a problem. Not sure about other types of felonies.
Misdemeanors are lower level, which can be punished by up to one year in confinement. There is usually a limit to the fine as well. Felonies are the higher level, which can be punished by more than one year, and/or death. Each jurisdiction further defines crimes. Many have different types of rankings within the felony/misdemeanor ranks.
