Dahmer, like most serial killers was into power. He needed to feel powerful and in control. What better way to feel powerful than to play God. For most serial killers the sex is secondary. Yes his crimes were sexual, but not about sex. It can be a confusing concept for most people. Dahmer said himself, he did not want his victims to leave. He hated being alone. But of course they had to leave, and most wanted to after he slapped on handcuffs or drugged them. But this should not be confused with motive. His MO (motis operandi) was to pick up young (most homosexual) men and boys and bring them back to his apartment, where he rendered them defenseless by one means or another, then they were raped repeatedly, and for the lucky ones he would kill them immediately. The unlucky ones were kept alive, sometimes for days, while Dahmer tortured them with his so-called 'experiments' such as drilling a hole to the brain and pouring acid right into the newly-bored hole.

Dahmer was killed by another inmate while in prison and most people believed that his death was much more humane than the deaths his victims suffered. This may be true, but the best we can do is to study his crimes and what is known about him, and try to learn how to prevent other Dahmers in the future.
