The Constitutional convention was not actually called the constitutional convention because it was created to modify the Articles of Confederation. However, the articles, although they had some benefits, were very weak and gave most power to the states and not to the central gov't, so the constitution was drafted in secret, so as not to influence any of the framer's views by outside opinions.
The constitution can be amended two ways outside of Congress. One is to hold a constitutional convention that would need to initiated by 2/3 (34 states) of the several states, followed by the convention and anything from the constitutional convention must be ratified by the 3/4 (38 states) of the several states. Another way is to simply proposed an amendment and have it pass through a state legislature or a state convention, which will then need to be ratified by 3/4 (38 states) of the several states. read article 5 of the constitution
Constitutional autochthony is asserting constitutional nationalism that is given by an outside power. It is a sort of autonomy that is given by a benevolent government.
Any war is disturbing, but a nuclear one would be especially so because of the possible spreading of fallout outside the combat zones into uninvolved and neutral nations.
They wanted to be able to have open discussion without outside pressures. Two hundred years ago there were no established political parties, but there was politics. It was as bad as it is today. They were correct to keep their thinking and discussion "in house."
