The first person to hold the title of President of the United States of America was, of course, George Washington, who was elected in 1789, after the Constitution was already ratified in 1787.

There were also presidents of the Continental Congress before that, dating all the way back to 1774 but none of them as famous as Washington. And the states were not exactly united back then.
