The Federalist Papers.
Initially, delegates were called to the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention to revise the still in-effect Articles of Confederation. After a while, however, the convention decided to scrap the Articles altogether in favor of drafting a new Constitution.
The Constitution was influenced by the Articles of Confederation. When the framers wrote the Constitution, they had only intended to amend the Articles, but a whole new document emerged.

Before our current Constitution, there was the Articles of Confederation between the various states. For a variety of reasons, the Articles of Conferation proved unsatisfactory, and so a Convention was convened to debate the formation of a "a more perfect union" through a new Constitution.
