Very good question! The period from 1783 when we received independence from Britain, was the worst period in American history - before or since! We were bankrupt, no borrowing credit, war-torn cities, heavy debt, states charging other states for commerce, states negotiating their own deals with foreign nations, etc.
Two terrific books tell the story very well. The best is "One Nation Under Debt" by Robert E. Wright. Another one is "The Peril's of Peace" by Thomas Fleming
