Republicans, hoped to increase their political advantage over Democrats by pushed for Northern Black male suffrage. However, this was not a popular topic in the North. In addition, the Amendmentâ??s passage in the South gave way to terrorist groups like the Ku Klux Klan who intimidated black male voters, effectively keeping them from voting.
