If you don't like what settlement offer is being given, speak to your attorney or if you are unrepresented, tell the other side that you refuse to settle for less than a certain amount. The number you give them should be higher than your bottom line, bare minimum that you are willing to take, in order to have leeway when bargaining so you can reach a figure that both parties will feel okay about. However, you do run the risk of them withdrawing their offer and if you don't have a strong case, you will have to take them to court where you run the risk of losing or incurring legal expenses.
