Killing a life is always a sin according to Bible. Sacrificing the life of animals were needed before New Testament. Even it became unneccessory when God gave his own son as a sacrifice. Thus God has given oppurtunity to every life to repent and come to the narrow way. It is a sin to take from a person what the God has given to him.

In self defense

God sent the Children of Israel into the promised land and they were commanded to kill all that breathed. This was not sin but God's justice. They were given the space of 400 years to repent of their sins.
