When was the term Terrorism first used?

Terrorism has been around for ages and ages. Technically, Ben Franklin and Samuel Adams were terrorists because they went against the British Crown. Some of the forefathers even intimidated British loyalists and flogged/feathered them. Terrorists have been around for quite a while. Terrorism is however a relative term. One man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter. In truth terrorism is very difficult to define === === Certainly, the Greeks were practicing a form of terrorism when they sent a covert ops team in against the Trojans, hidden inside a gift wooden horse. Sun Tzu, circa 500BC, may have coined the phrase "...kill one in order to terrorize 10,000...". I think it's fair to say that, depending on your definition of terrorism, it's been with us as long as mankind came out of the trees.

Terrorism is not new. Indeed, in some respects, that what is today known as terrorism predates by millennia the modern term used to describe it. This is not to say that the act of terrorism has remained static. Rather, as the difficulties involved in defining it reflect, terrorism has evolved considerably over the years, even if retaining some of the same characteristics that have historically typified it.

While it is impossible to definitively ascertain when it was first used, that which we today call terrorism traces its roots back at least some 2,000 years. Moreover, today's terrorism has, in some respects come full circle, with many of its contemporary practitioners motivated by religious convictions - something which drove many of their earliest predecessors. It has also, in the generally accepted usage of the word, often possessed a political dimension. The term terrorism was first used in the 1790s to describe terror used by government during the French Revolution.
