You must have a Survey done to get the property lines documented by a qualified NC Licensed Surveyor. That last time I had one done the cost was $350.00. You could use a metal detector to find the property stakes, but that doesnt prove that its correct. Anyone can move them.

Answer

You really don't have to be the one to "find" the property lines. You should ask the seller to show you where the property lines are and ask your attorney if there is a recorded survey of the premises. You should know what you're buying ahead of time. The attorney who is representing you in the purchase should be able to show you what property you are buying because he/she will be certifying the title of that property to the bank if there will be a mortgage. One of the factors determined should be the location and quantity of the land you will be buying.

If the property lines are not easily determinable you should ask the seller to have them marked by a surveyor. If you wait until you have already purchased the land you may be in for a surprise. Caveat emptor: buyer beware.
