The concept of rights to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness were incorporated in various ways into the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. Not all people were treated as citizens and not all citizens were treated equally. Native Americans and African slaves were granted very few rights. Women had few rights. Poor people who did not own land had reduced rights. The expansion of rights to include all races and sexes and income levels has taken 200 years to be nearly complete.
