Dr. Holmes, real name Herman Webster Mudgett, had killed at least 27 men, women and children in his 'castle', in Chicago, IL, circa 1893. Police were certain of at least 27 victims but many feel it was far closer to 100. As modern law enforcement officers can atest, serial killers more often than not will not be forthcoming as to the number of their victims. Mudgett (Holmes) was hanged on May 7, 1896, at Philadelphia County Prison On August 19, 1895, Holmes' castle mysteriously burned to the ground. It is now the site of a post office.
