John Lennon was fatally shot outside his apartment building (The Dakota) on December 8, 1980. He was killed by an obsessive-maniac named Mark David Chapman. He said voices told him to do it and that he was also influenced by the young-adult novel "A Catcher in the Rye." John left behind two sons (Julian and Sean Lennon) and his wife Yoko Ono.
