Both the president and the judiciary have checks on the legislative power to create laws.
The president can veto legislation he/she does not approve of for any reason. Congress would then have the option to override that veto with a 2/3 majority vote in each house. Such legislation then becomes law without the president's signature. Often this checking power of the POTUS is wielded as a threat before legislation is passed, to affect changes that make it more acceptable to the executive branch.
The judiciary can strike down laws found to be against some rule, usually something written in the constitution. However, sometimes laws conflict with each other and the judiciary can give orders for the legislature to resolve the conflict, or they can resolve it by declaring certain parts or all of it invalid ("unconstitutional" is often used meaning not allowed under the constitution).
The obvious difference is the judiciary is supposed to be outside the political process (although that is not true in reality). They do not simply review and strike down laws, some party that is deemed to have standing must bring a case before an appropriate court. Not anyone has standing to bring a case, it depends on if they are harmed by the law or have some interest, such as the executive branch being forced to take some action it disagrees with.
Of course, the people have power to check legislative action as well but they only have the rear view mirror at their disosal...they can vote to replace representatives that pass laws the public does not like. The can apply political pressure, and via the judiciary, can challenge laws. In some cases they can pass voter initiatives that would thwart laws but that is more at the state level than federal.
One might hope the conscious and moral values of the legislators themselves would be a check on the passing of bad laws, but sadly that is not really the case in our system.
